Larry Ellison

The owner of software company Oracle is another American keen to invest at home. He may already live in California, but that hasn’t stopped him buying a swathe of homes in celebrity-favourite Malibu, where he can often be spotted enjoying the sun, sea and surf.

He has also reportedly splashed out £27m on a 249-acre estate in Palm Springs, featuring a Mediterranean-style mansion, eight guest houses, a spa and an outdoor party area.

But it isn’t just the US that attracts Ellison. He is also said to enjoy Japan in cherry blossom season, and also indulged in jaunts around the Mediterranean and South Africa when he owned a share of the fifth biggest superyacht in the world, Rising Sun.

He has now sold his share of the gleaming vessel – but not before causing controversy in the south of France in 2009 when he hosted… yes, you guessed it, the billionaire-magnet Blair family.

Bill Gates

Once the world’s richest man, Gates now has to settle for second fiddle thanks to his generous ‘giving pledge’ of £19bn to those in need around the world. But other than his enormous charitable donations, Gates is not known for extravagant gestures and has holidayed quietly in many spots around the world with little fanfare.

A favourite place to spend time with his family is in Croatia, on the Dalmatian Coast. The Gates brood can often be found in the small town of Skradin, which has fewer than 4,000 residents – a less-than-crowded situation that almost guarantees the Microsoft billionaire a slie of the quiet life.

The town – about 100km from Split – sits at the entrance to the Krka National Park, where visitors can enjoy ruined fortresses, waterfalls and a 15th-century monastery on Visovac Island.

And just to show his appreciation for the privacy afforded to him in his southern Croatia hideaway, Gates has also reportedly agreed to donate money to a charity clearing landmines left over from the Croatia’s 1991-95 war for independence.

Warren Buffett

The second richest man in America is known for enjoying the quiet life. Buffett may be worth £31bn, but he still lives in the house he first bought in Omaha, Nebraska, for £20,000 in 1958.

But he does like a few holiday homes, namely in Laguna Beach, California – the setting for The Hills, MTV’s reality show about rich high-school kids. Just south of Los Angeles and located in wealthy Orange County, Laguna Beach doesn’t bat an eyelid when America’s second richest man visits. They’re used to it. In fact, Newport Beach, just up the road, has the highest concentration of billionaires in the USA.

When not enjoying the California sunshine, Buffett also holidays in Augusta, Georgia, where he visits the super-exclusive Augusta National Golf Club – the hallowed sporting venue that hosts the US Open golf tournament each year, and sadly not a place for us ordinary tourists.

Bernard Arnault

The Frenchman has retained the title of the richest European. He certainly likes to enjoy the high life that goes with it (well he does have a hand in Dom Perignon, Luis Vuitton and Hermes).

His superyacht Amadeus is often seen floating off the Cote d’Azur, and he even hosted Tony and Cherie Blair on board in 2007 on one of their ‘freebie’ holidays that so irked the British public.

He clearly has a taste for the celebrity too, also inviting Bono on board for a sunbathe. For winter pursuits, Arnault is well set, owning the luxury hotel Cheval Blanc in the chic ski resort of Courchevel.

Cold shoulder: Bernard Arnault likes to holiday on the Cote d’Azur, or in Courchevel, where he owns a hotel

Carlos Slim

This Mexican telecoms owner has kept Bill Gates off the number one spot on the Forbes rich list for the second year in a row thanks to his £46bn fortune. So what does he spend it on? Well, the chances are, if you have visited Mexico City, you have enjoyed a slice of his fortune without even knowing it.

Slim has invested millions in upgrading the centre of the city to make it a more attractive tourist destination. The areas around the central square and cathedral have received a Slim-funded gild, and the billionaire is also set to open a free art museum in the north of the city. The Museo Soumaya – named after his late wife – will be stocked with European greats and unusual Mexican pieces.

Slim’s favourite holidays with his wife were around Europe, visiting museums and galleries – and it was her influence that encouraged him to start his vast art collection. Among their best-loved spots were the British Museum in London, as well as the National Gallery and Natural History Museum.
